Marc Chagall is probably the most famous Belarusian artist and Marc Chagall's museum is one of the most visited museum in Belarus.

Marc Chagall is one of the most famous belarussians. Chagall is known around the world for his surrealist paintings.
Chagall was born in Vitebsk on 7th of July 1887. He studied in St. Petersburg. After Chagall moved to Paris in 1910, where he joined the Cubism Art School. Before the First World War in 1914, he returned to Vitebsk. After the revolution in 1917 he founded a school of painting in Vitebsk. In 1920, Chagall moved to Moscow, and then back to Paris. During World War II he and his wife moved to the United States. In 1944 his wife died, and then Marc Chagall wasn't painting for several years. In 1960 Chagall created stained glass windows for Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, and then he created around all the world, including Germany, France and the UK. Marc Chagall died in France in 1985.

Chagall's art is difficult to classify. He was very passionate about the avant-garde, his work was constantly on the verge of mass art and emerging trends, including Cubism, Fauvism and Surrealism.


Marc Chagall Museum

Marc Chagall Museum was opened in 1992 and it is one of the most interesting museum in Belarus. The collection is over 300 original works of art. The museum also displays reproductionsmarc_chagall2.jpg of some of the most famous Chagall's works.

There is also another part of the Chagall's museum opened in 1997. It's located in Chagall's parents' house, where the artist spent his childhood. The most important onject in the museum is the building itself, where Chagall lived with his parentsl. On display there are objects from everyday life of XIX-XX, copies of archival photographs and documents relating to the artist's lifee. There are few items displayed that belonged to the parents of Chagall.

The exhibition consists of the following parts (rooms): "Grocery", "Room for boys", "Salon", "Red Room", "Kitchen".The interior of the house was reconstructed according to the archival documents and works of Marc Chagall in Vitebsk.

UNESCO in Belarus

Belarus became a member of UNESCO in 1954 and for many years was supported by this international unesco_belarus.jpgorganization. With the help of UNESCO in Belarus is implementing a number of interesting projects in education, science, information, communication and, of course, culture.

In October 1988 Belarus joined the Convention about the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 1972 and today there are 4 objects in the territory of Belarus which are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The first one  was included into the list in 1992. It was the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" (natural heritage) - a unique forest reserve in Europe, protected since XIV century.

In 2000 into the World Heritage List of UNESCO was included the early XVI century castle complex "Mir".  Architecture of the castle combines Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance, what makes him one of the most beautiful castles in Europe.

Two other object joined UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in 2005. This is the "Architecture and cultural complex of the Radziwill Family at Nesvizh" and the Struve Geodetic Arc.

Palace in Nesvizh for centuries was the seat of one of the wealthiest and most influential dynasties in Europe - Radziwill. Today the magnificent restored castle is the hallmark of Belarus.

World famous geodesic structure - Struve Geodetic Arc - Connect 265 points in 10 countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova. According to historical records, Belarus had 34 points and only 20 survived. Five of them are equipped with special signs and they were included in the World Heritage List of UNESCO.

Museum in Motol

Museum of Folk Art in Motol is based on a collective farm museum in 1989. The museum is opened for motol.jpgvisitors officially in August 1995. The exposition of the museum is dedicated to material and spiritual culture of the West Polesie. In four exhibition halls of the museum is presented about 27,000 exhibits.

The Museum of Folk Art in Motol divided into the following divisions: weaving, agriculture, crafts, stories of peasant life, national costumes, folk costumes, folklore.

The museum's displays have different form and content: archaeological finds, tools, pottery and weaving products, wood products, cartoon collections, woven, embroidered carpets, embroidery, aprons and more. Here you can see also the famous Motol coats which were famouse among leaders of local party.

The museum also has a photo-store. The pearl of the photo library are the pictures taken before the II motol2.jpgWorld War, by one of the local person. The fotografer also designed his camera himself!

There is also a diorama of ancient Motol (diorama - ribbon-like, curved semicircle tableau, the picture painted on both sides). There is also a windmill on the territory of the museum.

The tours in museum can be organised in russian, belarussian, english or polish languages.

The museum is opened seven days per week from 10 am till 5pm.

Museum of Folk Art in Motol always attracts tourists who choose vacation in Belarus. It should be noted that the museums of Belarus in general are becoming more and more popular. And especially the ones that tell about folk art, traditions and identity of Belarusians.
